Driveways by Heap FAQ

If you have questions about your driveway or another paving project, turn to Driveways by Heap. We can answer all of your questions about driveways, playgrounds, sidewalks, walkways and parking lots.
  • How do I take care of my new driveway?

The most common complaint about new driveways is tire marks. Tire marks are caused by sharply turning the wheel without the vehicle moving, even if the turning movement is slight. You can avoid tire marks by driving straight in and out of your driveway and making sure your car is in motion while you turn the wheel.

You can also avoid tire marks by making sure you don't park within six inches of the edge of the driveway. You may notice tire impressions and indentations on your driveway after a hot day or within the first two weeks of installation, but this will even out as you drive on it. You can protect your driveway by hosing it down with cold water.

Since asphalt is flexible and contains oil, you should not store objects with sharp or heavy points on your driveway. Put a 3/4" piece of plywood under any sharp or heavy object to protect your pavement. Objects that can cause damage to your driveway include, but are not limited to, bike and motorcycle kickstands, car jacks, trailer hitches, grills, and lawn chairs. In addition, gasoline, diesel, and oil can stain or erode your driveway.

Keep in mind that asphalt is made from stones of various sizes mixed with liquid asphalt causing different textures in your driveway. These various textures are especially noticeable in spots done by hand, such as pads and walkways.

You should sealcoat your driveway within 3-6 months of having your new driveway paved. Sealcoating should be applied every 3-5 years.
